Is it track 1 or what?

It's not always track 1. You have to determine which track is the melody, usually by identifying the instrument used.

Is there a program you would recommend that makes it easier than trying to guess which track it might be?

There is no program that would tell you which track is the melody track. It all depends on the sequencer. Sometimes multiple tracks contain the melody. Identifying melody track is relatively easy if you know how to read music. Open the MIDI with a sequencing software (or see its sheet music previews on HamieNET).
